Handling Disputes and Grievances
Disputes or grievances can arise from time-to-time. If your child is under 18, you have the right to discuss a dispute with the employer.
Discussions between child, parent and employer should be conducted in a calm and constructive manner so a resolution can be made without causing additional stress or anxiety.
Disputes or grievances can arise from time-to-time. Encourage your child to find out about the process to follow if there is a dispute over pay or other conditions.
Because work is part of the maturing and development process, it can be a good practice to encourage your child to work through the dispute with their employer, using the processes available. This could include seeking advice from their union. However, since high school students are often under the age of 18, parents or carers do have the right to discuss a dispute with the employer. These discussions need not be confrontational. Approach the situation calmly and ask questions; it may be a case of a simple misunderstanding.
