Flexibility
Flexibility at work is a key attribute students look for in a job. It allows them to move their shifts quickly to complete school tasks.
If your workplace allows shift-swapping make sure your young employees are completely aware of the rules and policies.
Because academic demands fluctuate throughout the year, students require flexibility at work in order to successfully navigate the peaks and troughs of the school year. While HSC students require study time prior to examinations, younger students will also need time off to complete assignments and to study for tests.
Students say that flexibility is the thing they most appreciate in an employer. It is important to be clear about how much notice is required for a shift change so that students know when to ask for time off to complete assignments.
Swift swapping allows students to make last minute changes to their schedules by finding another colleague to work a shift for them. Students appreciate the trust an employer places in them to manage their schedules and is often rewarded with loyalty. In order to facilitate shift swapping:
- Keep an up-to-date staff list with contact details (e.g. telephone numbers and email addresses)
- Be clear about your shift swapping policy - when swapping is permitted, by whom, who can approve swaps and how much notice is required
There is a "shift swapper" tool on the student section of this website for use by student workers. To use it, visit the Time Tamer.
