Keeping your workplace safe for students

Employers Information

Occupational Health and Safety

The safety and well-being of your employees is paramount. Are you sure you know what to do if a young worker reports a safety issue or suffers a work related injury?

Employers must keep a Register of Injuries. It must show the name of the injured person, the date that the injury occurred, and the cause of the injury.

First-time workers will need training on how to handle tools and behave safely in the workplace. Take the time to teach student safety from the beginning. Build OHS information into induction programs and manuals so that students start out in the job safely.

Be clear about the process to follow if an accident occurs. By law, employers must keep a Register of Injuries. It must show the name of the injured person, the date that the injury occurred, and the cause of the injury. It is important that there is a written record in case there are any longer-term consequences (like a recurring or ongoing injury).

Students are eligible to make claims under Workers' Compensation for lost wages and medical costs. Provide the correct forms. If you don't have them, contact WorkCover NSW on 13 10 50. As an employer you are required to have Workers' Compensation insurance.
