Flexibility
Flexibility is the key attribute students look for in an employer. It allows them to move their shifts quickly to complete school tasks.
If your child works in an environment where shift-swapping is allowed, make sure they are completely aware of the rules and policies set out by their employer.
Because academic demands fluctuate throughout the year, students require flexibility at work in order to successfully navigate the peaks and troughs of the school year. While HSC students require study time prior to examinations, younger students will also need time off to complete assignments and to study for tests.
Students say that flexibility is the thing they most appreciate in an employer. It is important to know how much notice is required for a shift change so that students know when to ask for time off to complete assignments. Encourage your child to find out.
Swift swapping allows students to make last minute changes to their schedules by finding another colleague to work a shift for them. In order to facilitate shift swapping, your child should:
- A list of colleagues they know are happy to swap shifts, including contact details (e.g. telephone numbers and email addresses)
- Understand the shift swapping policy - when swapping is permitted, by whom, who can approve swaps and how much notice is required
There is a "shift swapper" tool on the student section of this website for use by student workers. To use it, visit the Time Tamer.
