Paying tax
The amount of tax a student pays depends on their income.
Equip your child with the knowledge they need to understand the importance of taxation when arranging their finances.
Just like everyone else, student workers need to pay tax. It will most likely be the responsibility of the employer to make sure they are deducting the correct amount of tax from the student's pay and sending it to the Australian Tax Office. If a student is uncertain whether this is happening correctly, they can contact the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) Call Centre for information between 8am and 6pm weekdays on 13 28 61 from anywhere in Australia.
The amount of tax deducted depends on how much the student will earn in a year. If a student wants to figure it out, the current rates of tax are set out on this ATO web page:

Encourage students to ALWAYS keep their pay slips so there is a record of what they have been paid, the hours they have worked, and the tax which has been deducted.
