How to apply
Students may find it hard to write their first CV / resume. Give your child the advice they need and help them make that good first impression.
A well structured and detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resume is vital for any student hoping to secure a job. Show your child how.
Students, like all workers, stand a better chance of getting a position if they can supply potential employers with a Curriculum Vitae - CV. Creating a CV is an important learning experience and is a skill your child will take with them through later life.
There is an extensive section on how to write a CV on the students section of this site and a CV Maker that will ensure your child is presenting a professional image.
We recommend that students be encouraged to tackle the job of writing a CV independently. After they have finished a draft, check to ensure it includes the following:
- Essential personal information - name and contact details.
- Relevant experience - what your child has done which could have prepared them for the job. Encourage them to include any voluntary work or school work experience.
- Qualifications- eg School certificate, First Aid Certificate, Life Saving Certificate, especially if relevant to the position.
- Any outside interests which might have a bearing on the job - eg Youth Group leadership activities.
- The names and contact details of at least two referees.
Some things to bear in mind:
- A list of achievements will communicate more than a description of duties.
- A concise but comprehensive account of roles, responsibilities and achievements in the most recent past (two to three years) is most appreciated.
