Interviews
Your child's first job interview can be a daunting and overwhelming experience. Help your child prepare for the interview so they can go into it with confidence.
Good preparation and interview practice is the key. Use family members and friends to conduct mock interviews so your child has an idea of the types of questions they may face.
Interviews can be an intimidating experience for us all, particularly for young workers. If your child is attending their first interview, you might do a mock interview with them beforehand. Here are a few reminders for interview candidates:
- Dress smartly, be neat and clean, and don't chew gum.
- Be on time.
- Turn off mobile phones.
- Be polite: smile, say thank you, shake hands, don't swear.
- Use the proper names of the person you are speaking with (e.g. Mr Brown, Ms Black or the person's first name if they have said you can use their first name)
- Make direct eye contact with the interviewer and don't look at the ground.
- Try to be relaxed, speak clearly and positively, ask questions about the job that you have prepared beforehand.
- Listen carefully, answer the questions asked.
- Have copies of your CV available.
