Staying Safe at Work

Student Information

If you are injured at work

The first thing to do is get any medical attention you need.

You must report the incident and injury to the appropriate person in charge - your supervisor or boss.

The injury must be recorded in the Register of Injuries which the employer must keep. It must show the name of the injured person, the date that the injury happened, and the cause of the injury. It is important that there is a written record, in case there are any longer-term consequences (like a recurring or ongoing injury)

If you need to have time off work because of the injury, or have medical costs associated with it, you will need to make a claim under Workers' Compensation. Your employer should provide you with the correct forms. If they don't have them, contact WorkCover NSW on 13 10 50.

When you go to the doctor, make sure you tell the doctor your injury happened at work.

If the injury is serious there may need to be a written return-to-work plan. You must co-operate with this. There are two such plans:

·         an injury management plan prepared by the insurance company and your employer

·         a return-to-work plan prepared by your employer.

In most cases you will receive weekly benefits and medical expenses within seven days of your employer notifying the insurance company.

Your treating doctor will organise treatment and complete your WorkCover medical certificates.

If you are concerned about the way your injury is being managed, contact WorkCover NSW and/or your union.
