Where students find jobs
Teachers are sometimes first source of information for students. As an advisor you may need to refer them to places where suitable jobs are advertised.
There are numerous resources available for students to use to find their ideal job. Encourage students to search as widely as possible.
Students may ask you where they should start looking for a part-time job. Here are some places to start:
- Family
- Friends
- Neighbours
- Businesses in their local area
- School or community notice boards
- Company websites
- Job Search websites
If they want a job with one of the big retail or fast food chains, they will probably have to apply on-line, so search the name of the company and check their website first.
Tips to provide students:
- Be sure to tell people that you are looking for a job
- Decide where you would most like to work, go there and ask for an interview
- Visit places that people tell you about and ask for an interview in person.
- Browse websites of companies and job agencies
Of course, Careers Advisers may have leads on part-time work that is available near the school. Check with your colleagues first before referring students to them.
