Getting a Tax File Number

Advise your students on the easiest way for them to get a Tax File Number and help them get started on learning about the taxation system.

Students don't have to apply directly to the ATO for a Tax File Number. Schools which are part of the Secondary TFN program can apply on their behalf.

A Tax File Number (TFN) is a unique number used throughout one's working life. It is not compulsory to have one, but in the absence of one, the employer is required to deduct the maximum amount of tax (46%).

The easiest way to get a TFN is via the secondary schools TFN program. Applying this way is easy because the school verifies the student's identity. Students then don't need to provide any evidence to the Tax office of identity documents; that is handled by the school. They will need to bring to school an identity document like a birth certificate (if born in Australia) or passport (if born overseas).

Check with your school to see if they are part of the program.
