Occupational Health and safety

Students may ask their teacher for advice on occupational health and safety. There are many sources of information and help.

Employers must keep a Register of Injuries. It must show the name of the injured person, the date that the injury occurred, and the cause of the injury.

Safety is an important concern for all employers and employees. Providing a safe and healthy workplace and systems of work is a legal obligation of all employers. Keeping a workplace free of injuries, bullying, discrimination and sexual harassment is important for everyone.

If a student is unsure about what the rules are, whether they should be operating certain equipment or want general advice about health and safety matters, they can get advice by ringing the Office of Industrial Relations on 131 628 in NSW.

Students should know the process to follow if an accident occurs. By law, employers must keep a Register of Injuries. It must show the name of the injured person, the date that the injury occurred, and the cause of the injury. It is important that there is a written record in case there are any longer-term consequences (like a recurring or ongoing injury).

Students are eligible to make claims under Workers' Compensation for lost wages and medical costs. Employers should provide the correct forms. For more information, contact WorkCover NSW on 13 10 50.
